Craftsmanship

Alongside textiles there has developed many other artistic and creative crafts, including carpentry, woodcarving, brass work and pottery.  The crafts of India are the creation of generations of families, who over the centuries have honed their work to remarkable heights.  For centuries, the skills of Indian craftsman have been admired and coveted the world over.

Blue-glaze pottery was first introduced to India in the 18th century and became a fixed ingredient of Mughal culture.

The village potter has been an enduring feature of Indian village life, producing utilitarian pots and jugs, decorative vessels and elaborate icons of deity for generations.  There are estimated to be over 1 million potters in India.
